EPISODE VIII

More Dogs (Part 2)

We always say DUFC is for the homeless dogs. In fact, not any dog is welcomed. And we set our standard pretty high. Having good football skill does not guarantee you a place in DUFC.

There is no formal way to join the Team. If you come to play and feel comfortable to keep playing on, you would find yourselves suitable for DUFC. But if you are not the right person, you will somehow leave the Team after a few matches. We simply believe that personality speaks for itself and time is the only way to prove whether you are the right person or not. It sounds magical. Well, yes it is.

Four more Dogs were joined-in during that period:-

Brain Chan (as known as Brian): He is colleague of Jackie when he started playing with the Team. He plays full back (both left and right) most of the time. And he is a player who would not give-up easily. You will think of him as Gary Neville and Stuart Pearce. No opponent would like to see his aggressive tackles but don't you think a full back should be equipped with that?

Since he joined in, he becomes a solid part of the defense. He never hesitates to challenge the opponent and do the dirty works. And he also maintains a stable attendance since his join. Good Dog!

Brian Brian

Martin (as known as Martin): He is colleague of Curtis when he joined the Team. He plays right back all the time. He learned his football in England and that's why he loves to play traditional English football, i.e. kick and run. He is the first English-speaking player of the Team.

He spends his life equally between Hong Kong and England since he joined and that stops him from establishing himself a regular place in DUFC. However, he does bring in the English style to the Team, especially when he introduces several more English-speaking players later on.

He is the 武藏小學三杉淳 of DUFC. They both can only play for 15-20 minutes, though Martin does not have heart disease.

Martin

Fly Luk (as known as Seasman): He was in the same class of Hoi in their secondary school. We all agree that he should join the Team in Day One, simply because he plays goalkeeper. He is the most welcomed player, especially when we play competitive match against opponent team.

In football, goalkeeper is a very specialized position and it needs completely different skills. 99.99% of football players don't (or pretend that they don't) have those skills. You can start a football match without any forward, but you can't start it without a goalkeeper. So, Fly, we need you, every single match.

By the way, as a guy who plays football for nearly 20 years, I still don't understand why people like to play goalkeeper. Fly, can you really give me the answer?

Fly Fly

Keep (as known as Brother-In-Law): He is brother-in-law of Curtis. He can play every position of defense and he is especially good at the central of it. Though he is not a very active player in his early period with the Team, he indeed save the Team many times. Looking back, he is the first "milestone-signing" of the Team. The effect is as large as of Man United signing Eric Cantona.

Keep Keep

Let me explain to you: DUFC used to be an all-out-attack team and they don't know what defense is. They simply don't care about how many goals they conceded since they believe they can score more and then win. As a result, they won big matches but they also lose big matches. The awareness on importance of defense and the consistency of performance were totally missed until this period of time, five years since they started playing together.

Dogs like Ryan, Sam, Brian, Fly and Keep fine tune the philosophy and attitude of the Team. They did not change the Team single-handed. But they do bring the balance to DUFC. The Team plays better games since then.

They provide a solid foundation to the defense of DUFC and that make changes possible. May I ask you: How can you improve your defense if you got no good defender? Let me remind you that none of them are indeed any of the founder members. DUFC grows with them. To be more precise, DUFC grows by them.
