EPISODE IX

Wilson & Friends

DUFC used to play with each other in training matches and they seldom play against opponents. No suitable opponents would be one of the reasons. Non-existence of a good organizer would be another.

"Wilson & Friends" is a team which is very similar to DUFC in many aspects. They are close friends, they enjoy playing together, they play football for fun and they seldom play against opponents.

These two teams match each other perfectly. In fact, they started playing with each other around the Shatin shelter period. I remember once "Wilson & Friends" was being invited to play on the grass pitch of Shatin shelter. After that, they played with each other almost every Sunday morning.

In the early period of this long playing time, they played on stone grounds which were booked by cFat. They visited every single pitch in Sham Shu Po, Tai Kwok Tsui, Prince Edward and Lok Fu. Every Post Office staff treated cFat as their VIP because he himself contributes 1.3% of annual stamp sales from sending out pitch booking application letter week in week out (since 1995 and continuing). Without him, there will be no DUFC. Thank you very much, cFat.

It is always 7 vs 7 and it is always DUFC vs "Wilsons & Friends". Never once they cross-change their players. It is during this period that LCK and Hoi made themselves the default forward partner and it is during this period that Sing reached his 20,000th Crazy-Tiger-Shoot. For those matches, no one bother counting who score how many and what are the results, except Hoi told me he scored a hat trick with his trademark-smile, occasionally.

Wilson & Friends

Later on, they move to the big grass pitch of Joint University Stadium located in Kowloon Tong where they play 11 vs 11, though it was still DUFC vs "Wilson & Friends". This is indeed a very long time that DUFC played on grass pitch since they leave the Shatin shelter. Besides, the pitch is a standard size football pitch, i.e. much bigger than the one in Shatin shelter.

To play football in a standard size football pitch, you have to keep in mind two very important principals. Firstly, you need to maintain the "formation" all the time or you would be overwhelmed by the opponents. As you know, DUFC don't know anything about "formation". Secondly, you need 11 players who "know" exactly what they should do in their positions or you would see a bundle of headless chickens chasing the ball. Well, DUFC is formed by a bundle of headless chickens.

Luckily, "Wilson & Friends" also plays like a bundle of headless chickens. It was these ten plus matches that turned DUFC from a team of small pitches into a team that knows how to play on a large pitch. You might not 100% agree but, as a matter of fact, DUFC now plays better on a large pitch after the training of the Joint U pitch. For this, we should thank you the pitch booker, Ar Yung.

I remember two little stories happened in this pitch. (1) Martin, our great right back, once got the ball from our keeper, he pushed forward, ran pass 2 defenders, reached the bottom line, shot the ball toward Greenland, and walked away to take a long rest. (2) Curtis, our great left wing, once got the ball near the centre line, he pushed forward, ran pass 4 defenders, reached the bottom line, shot the ball toward Sabah, and walked away to have a cigarette (see below photo, Curtis is, once again, walking out for a little break ...). Now you believe the pitch is really big, don't you?
